The Sir JJ collegel of Architecture was the first modern school to introduce a structured course in architecture in India. The Sir JJ School of Art was set up in 1857 as the Bombay School of Art & Industry and was attached to the Sir JJ School of Arts in 1896. In 1913, a separate and independent Department of Architecture was carved out from the Sir JJ School of Art. In 1952, the department of architecture became a department of the University of Mumbai, and the school became the Sir JJ College of Architecture. The college is named after Sir Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy, a merchant and philanthropist, known for his large donations and financing large public construction works in Surat, Pune, and Bombay. The campus is located in south-Mumbai and houses the Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art, the Sir J. J. School of Art, and the Government Institute of Printing Technology.
